About Claud 8
Claud 8 (pronounced Claudette) is a polyphonic synthesizer running entirely in your browser — no plugins, no installs, synthesized live with the Web Audio API. Notes come from the on-screen keyboard, QWERTY, MIDI, the arpeggiator, or the sequencer; each voice runs through its own oscillators, filters, and amp envelopes before summing together and passing through a shared effects chain - drive, modulation FX, delay, and reverb - then a final EQ and master volume stage. Each stage is broken down below.

What each stage does
Keyboard / MIDI — your mouse, computer keyboard, or a connected MIDI controller triggers notes.
Arpeggiator — optional pattern engine that re-triggers held notes automatically, with hold/latch and a 32-step gate grid (two rows of 16). Mutually exclusive with the Sequencer - switching one on turns the other off.
Sequencer — an independent step sequencer (64 steps by default, extendable to 128) where each step stores both an on/off gate and its own pitch or chord, set via a full 88-key note picker. Page navigation is arrow-based ("3 / 8"), with both the page count and the Steps knob's range tracking the sequencer's actual current length rather than a fixed ceiling - and while the sequencer is running, the page view automatically follows the play head, jumping ahead whenever playback crosses onto a new page. A melody (including chords) can also be imported directly from a MIDI file, sized to fit however many steps it actually needs - potentially several thousand for a long import - rather than a fixed limit, with automatic BPM detection and chord recognition for the source file. Shares one master clock (BPM) with the Arpeggiator, though division and gate length are its own.
Oscillator ×4 — three independent pitched waveform generators per voice plus a dedicated noise oscillator, each with its own filter and amp envelope, plus two sub-oscillators tied to Oscillator 1's chain, with optional unison stacking (multiple detuned copies) on Oscillator 1 and/or 2. Oscillators 2 and 3 additionally offer four self-contained wave types beyond the basic waveforms: Supersaw (a 1-14 voice detuned stack with adjustable spread), Hypersaw (Supersaw plus a clean sub-octave square layer, mixable in on top for extra weight), Wavetable (four curated tables, scanned via a Position control), and Sample (four built-in synthesized samples, or your own uploaded audio file).
Noise — the 4th oscillator, mixed directly alongside the pitched oscillators and subs, with its own full filter and amp envelope chain identical in structure to Oscillators 1-3. Five distinct colors (White, Pink, Brown, Blue, Violet), each a real, verified algorithm rather than a relabeled variant.
Filter ×4 — one filter per oscillator (including noise), each switchable between Lowpass/Highpass/Bandpass/Band-reject, with a 1-4 pole slope control and its own filter envelope.
Amp ×4 — one amplitude envelope (ADSR) per oscillator (including noise), shaping how that oscillator's volume evolves over the note, plus an Env Amt knob controlling how much the decay stage actually pulls level down from the attack peak (0% holds flat at the peak, 100% is the full original decay-to-Sustain behavior).
LFO ×2 — two independent modulation sources, each with its own waveform and rate. Either can be routed to any oscillator's pitch, any filter's cutoff, or any amp stage's level, chosen per destination rather than tied to one target.
Voice bus — sums all four oscillator chains together, and sums across every currently-held note (polyphony).
Drive — wet/dry saturation stage for adding harmonic grit.
Mod FX — eight modulation effects (Phaser, Flanger, Ensemble, Tremolo, Chorus, Vibrato, Ring, Echo), all running in parallel and crossfaded on switch. Shared Rate/Depth/Mix knobs adapt their meaning per type - e.g. Rate becomes delay time for Echo, Depth becomes feedback amount.
Delay — five distinct characters (Analog, Digital, Tape, BBD, Reverse), all running in parallel and crossfaded on switch so changing type never clicks. Ping-pong bounces repeats between left/right with an adjustable pan width.
Reverb — seven characters (Room, Hall, Plate, Spring, Cathedral, Shimmer, Blackhole), each a distinct impulse-response shape (decay curve, duration, pre-delay), plus Size and Dampening knobs shared across all of them for finer shaping. Shimmer additionally feeds a real pitch-shifted (octave-up) feedback loop back into the reverb, built from two crossfaded delay-based pitch shifters.
Master volume — the final gain stage before output, with a stereo L/R level meter (color-graded green/yellow/red, with peak-hold) and a clip indicator that lights up the instant either channel hits 0dBFS, clearing on its own shortly after or with a click.
3-Band EQ — Low/Mid/High shelving and peaking filters shaping the overall tone before it reaches your speakers.
Panic — instantly kills every voice, switches off Drive/Delay/Ping-Pong/Reverb/Arp/Sequencer, and resets the reverb and delay feedback loops so nothing keeps ringing.
Patch Save / Load — a library of built-in presets alongside up to 448 of your own, saved to browser storage with a name and a category (Bass, Lead, Pad, Pluck, Bell/Percussive, Organ, Ambient/Drone, FX, Sequence, or Other). The Load browser filters by category or name search, with a "My Patches" shortcut to jump straight to everything you've saved. Built-in presets are read-only; your own can be deleted from the same browser.
